Bringing a newborn into the world is such an incredible milestone, and capturing those first few days can be a beautiful way to remember these fleeting moments. For moms in Northeast Ohio, here’s a guide on how to make the most of your newborn session and what you’ll want to know beforehand to help things run smoothly.
Why Newborn Photography Matters
Newborn sessions are more than just photos—they’re a chance to hold onto those tiny features, from wispy hair to the sweetest yawns. Many moms I’ve worked with in Medina and Akron have told me they’re so glad they took the time to capture these early days. Newborn sessions let you pause time, even just for a moment, in those first chaotic and wonderful days.
When to Schedule Your Session
One question I hear all the time is, “When is the best time to do newborn photos?” For that classic, sleepy newborn look, I recommend scheduling within the first two weeks, ideally between days 5-12. Babies are usually extra sleepy and easy to pose during this time. That being said, newborn photos can be done anytime you are feeling well enough to do so. Recovering from childbirth is a huge adjustment and we all need to feel comfortable in our skin again before jumping in front of a camera. Some NICU stays can extend this time-frame as well. Feel free to reach out with any questions about scheduling a ‘later’ newborn photo session.
How to Prep for Your Newborn Photography Session
1. Choose an outfit that is easy to change baby out of
This makes the first transition for baby in the studio go a little bit smoother. Zippered sleepers are best since they don’t have to go over baby’s head to be taken off. I have a collection of wraps, blankets, and neutral-colored outfits at the studio here in Wooster to keep things stress-free. I find that neutral tones work best and help keep the focus on your baby.
2. Feed and Burp Baby Right Before
A well-fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby! If possible, feed and burp your little one right before the session starts. You can do this at home or arrive early to the studio. This usually helps them settle into those peaceful poses. We’ll have breaks as needed, but a nice full tummy right from the start can be a big help.
3. Create a Calm Atmosphere
My studio is set up to feel as comfortable as home, with natural lighting and gentle white noise. Even if baby does not take a pacifier, I recommend bringing one along. This makes position and outfit changes a little less startling to baby. Many Northeast Ohio moms have told me this calming environment made a big difference, especially when working with a sleepy, new little one.
What to Bring to the Studio
Packing a few essentials can make all the difference. Here’s a quick checklist of items to bring along:
- Extra diapers and wipes
- Favorite blanket/sentimental item (for comfort or for any shots you’d like to include)
- A change of clothes for you and baby (accidents happen!)
- A pacifier, if your baby uses one
- A full bottle, if you breastfeed and have any extra milk to bring along, please do so
Keeping things simple ensures we stay focused on the session without the stress of needing anything extra.
