Why Spring is the Perfect Time for Family Photos

Spring is finally here! The days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, and that winter chill is slowly fading away. There’s something magical about this season—everything feels fresh, new, and full of life. And if you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos, now is the perfect time!

As a family photographer, I always encourage my clients to take advantage of spring family photo sessions, and here’s why you should too.

Spring Family Photos

1. The Weather is Perfect (Most of the Time!)

Spring brings mild temperatures—no more sweating through summer heat or bundling up in winter coats. The cool, comfortable air makes outdoor sessions enjoyable, especially for little ones who might not tolerate extreme temperatures well.

While spring showers can sometimes pop up, I always have a plan B. If we need to reschedule due to weather, I work with families to find another date that works. Plus, a little cloud cover can actually create dreamy, soft lighting—so even if it’s not bright and sunny, your photos will still look amazing.

2. Spring Colors Make Stunning Backdrops

Spring is a season of color—lush green grass, delicate pastel flowers, and soft blue skies. These natural elements add a vibrant yet timeless look to family portraits. Whether we’re shooting in a blooming field, a garden, or a tree-lined park, the season’s natural beauty enhances every shot.

Neutral outfits pair beautifully with spring’s soft color palette, making your family the focal point of the images. If you’re unsure about what to wear, I offer styling assistance to help you coordinate outfits that complement both the season and your personal style.

3. Golden Hour is Extra Magical in Spring

Golden hour—the dreamy time just before sunset—produces the soft, warm lighting that makes photos feel magical. During spring, golden hour lasts a little longer, giving us the perfect light to capture your family’s natural interactions. This gentle glow flatters all skin tones and creates a timeless, ethereal quality in photos.

Another plus – if you have little ones that don’t tolerate late bedtimes, the early spring sunsets are perfect for you! Spring family photo sessions can start as early as 6:30pm until late May.

4. A Fresh Start for Family Memories

Spring symbolizes new beginnings, which makes it a beautiful time to document your family’s current season of life. Whether you’ve recently welcomed a new baby, your kids are growing faster than you can keep up with, or you just want to capture the joy of this stage in your lives, a spring photo session helps freeze those moments in time.

Many families book sessions in the fall for holiday cards, but spring sessions are a great alternative. You’ll have updated photos to display at home or to share with loved ones throughout the year. Plus, if you plan ahead, your spring photos can still be used for holiday cards—one less thing to worry about during the busy holiday season!

5. Spring Sessions Feel More Relaxed and Fun

Without the stress of holiday deadlines or the pressure of planning around school schedules, spring sessions feel more laid-back. Kids can run around, play, and explore, and we capture those natural, joy-filled moments without feeling rushed.

If you’ve ever worried about your kids cooperating during a session, spring offers an easygoing atmosphere where they can be themselves. We’ll take a mix of posed and candid shots, ensuring we capture their real personalities and the love between your family.

6. More Availability for Scheduling

Fall is the busiest time for family photographers, and dates book up fast. Spring, on the other hand, offers a little more flexibility, meaning you have a better chance of securing a session that fits your schedule.

I offer limited Spring Mini Sessions, which are short and sweet—perfect for busy families who want beautiful images without committing to a full session. These sessions are ideal for parents who want to capture their family as they are right now, without the stress of an extended photoshoot.

7. An Opportunity for Seasonal Tradition

Think about how special it would be to have a spring session every year, capturing your family’s growth and changes over time. These annual photos become treasured keepsakes, showing the story of your family in a way that no staged school portrait ever could.

Many families love the idea of making spring photos a tradition—something to look forward to each year, just like holiday photos.

How to Prepare for a Spring Family Session

If you’re ready to book a session, here are a few simple tips to ensure everything goes smoothly:

  • Choose outfits wisely: Soft neutrals, pastels, and light layers work beautifully in spring settings. Avoid loud patterns that might distract from your family’s connection in the photos.
  • Plan around nap times: If you have little ones, scheduling your session when they’re well-rested makes all the difference.
  • Keep it fun: The best family photos happen when everyone is relaxed and having a good time. Let go of the pressure for “perfect” poses, and focus on enjoying the experience with your loved ones.
  • Book early: Spring is a busy time, and sessions fill up quickly. Lock in your preferred date as soon as possible!
