Planning your family photo session and feeling a little overwhelmed by the “what do we wear?!” spiral? You’re not alone—and good news: it doesn’t have to be stressful.
After photographing dozens of families across Northeast Ohio, I’ve learned a few tried-and-true tips for choosing outfits that look beautiful on camera and feel like you. Whether you’re booking a family session, maternity session, or one of my golden-hour Keepsake Sessions, here’s everything you need to know about dressing your crew for spring and summer photos.

1. Start with a color palette
Choosing a soft, natural color palette is the easiest way to make your photos feel timeless and cohesive.
Here are a few of my favorite palettes that always work in Ohio’s spring and summer scenery:
- Cream, tan, sage green, and soft blue
- Warm neutrals like beige, ivory, camel, and blush
- Denim blue, white, and khaki
- Dusty rose, oatmeal, and olive green
You don’t need to match perfectly—in fact, it’s better if you don’t! Stick to a palette of 3–4 complementary tones and mix textures to add dimension.

2. Avoid bright neons, tiny patterns, and logos
When it comes to what not to wear, here’s what I recommend skipping:
- Bright/neon colors (they reflect oddly on skin in photos)
- Tiny stripes or loud patterns (they can be distracting)
- Logos or graphics (they date the photo and pull attention)
The goal is for your family to be the focus—not your clothes. Soft solids and subtle textures always win.
3. Dress for the location & season
If you’re booked for a golden-hour Keepsake Session, we’ll likely be photographing in a field or nature backdrop. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, gauze fabrics, and natural fibers look amazing in this setting—plus, they’re breathable for Ohio’s warmer evenings.
Quick tip: layers are your best friend. Even in summer, evenings can cool off, especially if your session is by a lake or in the woods. A cardigan, light button-up, or denim jacket can be both practical and pretty.

4. Think of movement
Some of the best images happen when your little one twirls, snuggles in close, or runs barefoot through the grass. Choosing clothes that allow for movement (and don’t need constant adjusting) helps you stay present during your session.
Maxi dresses, stretchy waistbands, and flowy tops work great for this.

5. Let kids be comfy (and themselves)
You don’t need your toddler in stiff button-ups or your baby in scratchy lace. Kids photograph best when they’re comfortable. Think soft cotton, elastic waists, and layers that can be added or removed depending on the temperature.
Bonus tip: avoid bribes during the session. Let’s keep snacks tucked away until the end, and we’ll focus on play-based, connection-driven photos that bring out real smiles.

6. Don’t forget the shoes!
We often walk a bit during outdoor sessions, so keep footwear simple and comfortable. Barefoot is totally fine for grassy areas. Neutral sandals, boots, or slip-ons also photograph beautifully. Try to avoid bright athletic shoes unless they’re a non-negotiable for your little one (no shame!).
7. I’m here to help
Every family who books with me receives a detailed styling guide and access to personalized wardrobe advice. You can even browse my curated client closet if you’re unsure what will work for you.
I know it’s a lot to coordinate outfits, wrangle kids, and just get there on time. But I promise—it’s worth it.
You’ll never regret having photos that capture your family as you are right now… sun-kissed, a little messy, and full of love.
