Preparing for Maternity Photos

Maternity sessions do not need to be a stressful experience. As a photographer, I work hard to make sure all you have to do is show up with your bump! Read 5 of the tips I give my clients when preparing for maternity photos below.

My 5 favorite tips when preparing for maternity photos

Exfoliate

Use an gentle skin exfoliator when you shower the night before or morning of your session. This helps your skin have a buttery smooth appearance after shaving. Check out this gentle exfoliator from 8 Sheep Organics

Lotion

Immediately apply a gentle lotion after showering and again right before your session. Be sure to really lotion up that bump!

Try on Outfits in Advance

Please, please, PLEASE don’t wait until the day of your session to try on what you plan to wear. What might fit well on the models bump may look completely different on yours. I recommend trying on outfits at least 3 weeks in advance. This gives a little time to change your mind if you just aren’t loving the fit. I provide a full (free!) client closet to my clients, as well as personalized styling for the rest of the family. I’ve spent hours digging for the best websites to order from, so I’m always full of suggestions if you’re searching for a specific look! Some of my favorites are Baltic Born, Free People, and Reclamation Design Company.

Hair & Make-up

To be completely open and honest, I am clueless when it comes to hair and makeup. On a good day, my face might get a little bit of lotion topped with powder (don’t laugh at me!) Preparing for maternity photos on top of getting everyone else in the family ready can be a really big task when you’re already exhausted from growing a human. Definitely schedule hair & make-up for the morning of your session if you don’t think you want to add anything else to your getting ready list.

Discuss Your Vision

I always have a detailed questionnaire for my clients to be completed before the session. This gives me some insight on personalities, styling preferences, and what details are important to them. Don’t be afraid to use pinterest to get some inspiration. If you aren’t a big visionary, then give your photographer a few key details to focus on a give them free range to create magic!
